What is a Casino?

A casino is a place where people play a variety of games of chance for money. Often, casinos also include other forms of entertainment such as restaurants, shows, and retail shops. The best-known casinos in the world are probably the Bellagio and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, although the Monte Carlo and Casino de Paris also have a certain level of fame.

The term is sometimes used for places that offer less extravagant forms of gambling, such as a horse racetrack or a card game. The American Gaming Association reports that in 2002, about 51 million people visited casinos domestically–a group that represents roughly a quarter of the population over 21 years old. In more recent times, casinos have become increasingly elaborate, with free drinks and stage shows, among other amenities.

In the early twentieth century, some casinos were financed by organized crime figures. Mob money gave them the capital they needed to attract Americans from across the country and around the globe. Mobster investors even took over or partially owned some casinos, and exerted a degree of control over others.

Nowadays, most casinos are choosy about who they let in to gamble. They target high rollers who spend a lot of money, giving them special treatment and rooms separate from the main floor. Many casinos also employ mathematicians and computer programmers to calculate the house edge and variance of their games. These analytical professionals are responsible for ensuring that the casino doesn’t make any mistakes that would cost them money in the long run.
