Basics of Poker

2 min read

Poker is a card game that involves strategy, psychology and a little luck. It can be played by 2 or more players in a circle, with the aim of winning the pot (all money bet during one hand) either by having the highest ranked card combination or bluffing. There are many different forms of poker, but all have similar fundamentals. The best way to learn the game is to blend theoretical understanding with practical experience. There are countless online resources and videos available that break down the basic rules and hand rankings, so make sure to familiarize yourself with them before playing.

Once all players have their two cards, a round of betting begins with the player to the left of the dealer. The first person to act can choose whether to call, raise or check.

When you say “check” you are telling the rest of the table that you do not have a strong enough hand to continue betting at, but you still want to see how the flop turns out.

If you decide that your original two cards have too low a value to continue, then you can say “hit.” The dealer will then give you an additional card. If you think your new card will improve the value of your original hand, then you can say stay or double up. A good way to improve the value of your hand is to bet aggressively. This will force weaker hands out and raise the value of your bets on the flop, turn and river.
